Office of Science Program in Biological and Environmental Research (BER): Environmental System Science (ESS)

The goal of the ESS program in BER is to advance an integrated, robust, and scale-aware predictive understanding of terrestrial systems and their interdependent biological, chemical, ecological, hydrological and physical processes.

RA1: Improved Understanding of Hot Spots and Hot Moments of Biogeochemical Cycling in Terrestrial Aquatic Interfaces (TAIs)

RA 2: Cold-Region Ecosystem and Watershed Process Responses to Changing Cold-Season Climate Drivers

RA3: Synthesis Research for Transferable Insights

The program will support standard (large) grants and synthesis  grants

Funding: Large grants $1,000,000  total ; Synthesis grants $300,000  total 

Duration:  Large grants 3 years ; Exploratory grants 1-2 years
