Understanding and Therapeutically Emulating Examples Where Individuals Are Naturally Protected From Developing T1D

Helmsley Charitable Trust’s aims to support the discovery and development of new therapies that will prevent or delay the development of T1D. 

Helmsley T1D Program seeks to support studies that aim to understand and/or therapeutically emulate natural protection from T1D.

Of specific interest are research plans that include:

• Understanding genetic protection from T1D (e.g., HLA-DQB1*06:02);
• Understanding maternal protection from T1D (any factor from mothers with T1D that protect their offspring from T1D);
• Understanding other examples of natural protection from T1D that are amenable to scientific study; and
• Developing or validating preclinical or clinical therapies to prevent or delay T1D that mimic aspects of natural protection.

Funding:

$300,000 per year for lab-based projects

$400,000 per year for clinic-based projets

$3,000,000 total for new cohort building projects
